Tonight we held our first regular Civic League meeting of 2020!
Our Community Resource Officers (CRO) introduced themselves. Officer Cody Morgan has been with us for a few months, and he was joined by Officer Samuel Scholl who our new CRO. Officer Mones has moved to other assignments in Norfolk PD. We wish him luck and will miss him at our monthly meetings!
Only one incident of crime to report for the month, and that was the use of a credit card that belonged to a neighbor. Keep your eyes out and if you see something suspicious please report it! Crime reports help Norfolk PD know where and when to move resources to keep us safe!
They discussed a little about rules for cars parking long term on roadways. As long as the car is not disabled, doesn’t block the road or restrict traffic, it is okay. Usually moving the car once in a while if it is not used regularly is sufficient. If there is a problem with cars, please talk to your neighbors (why good communication is important) if there is still an issue, then discuss it with the CROs.
Discussed one-way driveway at Best Thrift, since it’s private property, they cannot ticket/enforce the one-way. They will discuss with their supervisor, but we also are discussing how we can solve the problem. (See Below)
Our Guest Speaker, Ed Dye, from the Institute of Learning in Retirement talked about their organization and the classes and events they hold. He left us flyers and information on their organization, which you can find here.
No updates on the proposed apartments on Sellger Drive. Legal cases are completed. Waiting for the developer to move forward and will provide any additional updates on status as we get them.
Our quarterly clean-up for Adopt-a-Spot will take place on Saturday, February 29th, at 9 am. More information will be posted here, Nextdoor.com and in the Scoreboard!
The city is in the process of forming the East Side Task Force to represent the neighborhoods on the east side. An initial group has met with the Mayor and they are in the process of determining the members and things that will be focused on. Once we have the first meetings, we will update on status, and also take input on things you feel are important to you. We will update more as the Task Force is formed and moves forward.
There was a discussion tonight on concerns regarding the one-way driveway into the Best Thrift Shopping center. Several local neighborhoods and others have expressed concern about the danger of people coming out into traffic or blocking traffic at that intersection. Some additional signs were added in the past, but it doesn’t seem to have improved.
Ken Richards spoke with the Property Manager at Harvey Lindsay and they felt that the driveway belonged to the City and was their responsibility. After discussion with the CRO’s, and review of Norfolk AIR GIS maps, it appears it is private property. The CRO’s are going to discuss also to verify. If it is private property, then any actions would have to be taken by the property owner, via the property manager.
We will be sending a letter to the Property Manager, with documentation from Norfolk AIR, and recommendations for what we feel may improve the problem. We will also copy the Public Works Department, who would be responsible for the roadways, and possibly driveway requirements entering the roadways. We will also send copies to the adjacent Civic Leagues for them to use or take action on as they see appropriate.
Harlem Globetrotters will be in Hampton Roads at the Chartway Arena. For more information see the event page.
Question on the Straight through traffic lights on Curlew between Military Hwy and I-264 overpasses. Since the main traffic does not cross over the tracks, instead of turning red, could they remain yellow? I will send a note and discuss it with Public Works and also the adjacent civic leagues. To see if there would be any benefit to either staying yellow for through traffic or at least a flashing red that would allow drivers to continue after stopping. There may be a safety reason to keep drivers from trying to make a turn into the businesses there.
Next month’s meeting will be on March 3rd, 2020 at 7:30 pm at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. We are working on a speaker from HBRT Tunnel projects who purchased the building on Corporate to use as their offices while doing the Tunnel work over the next several years.
50/50 raffle was held, and the meeting closed at 8:30 pm. Socializing and food were arranged by Nancy and Diane!
Thank you to all who attended, and we look forward to seeing you next month!
